Student Clubs and Activities

Academic Resource Center: Umoja's Academic Resource Center (ARC) is located in Room 124. The ARC is open on Tuesdays and Fridays during lunch time for students who want a space to do homework or are looking for tutoring and after school for students who want a place to relax, do homework, or play games.
Meets Tuesdays and Fridays during lunch periods.

After School Matters: After School Matters is a nonprofit organization that offers Chicago teens innovative out-of-school activities through its science37, sports37, tech37, words37 and nationally-recognized gallery37 programs. ASM at Manley offers hands-on, project-based programs to expose teens to rewarding careers and help them develop marketable job skills.
Meets several days per week.

Archery: Manley's unique archery program trains students in the basics of the sport of archery.

Art Club: Art Club meets twice a week and provides students with a space to explore various artistic interests outside the regular school-day art curriculum.

Drill Team (Army JROTC): The purpose of the Manley High School Army JROTC Drill Team is to provide a means, through drill training and drill competitions, of enhancing the morale of the corps of cadets, developing the spirit of cohesion, and presenting traditional, interesting and well executed military drill routines and Color Guard routines. Membership provides for the development of participating cadets in the practice of team work and commanding cadets.

Family Focus / 21st Century: Family Focus provides a variety of after-school program for Manley students with a rotation of high-interest extracurricular programs such as swimming, digital video production, Homework Hookup, step/dance teams, Who Wants to Win a Scholarship?, and others.
Meets Monday through Thursday after school in various locations.

Homework Hookup (21st Century Family Focus): After school tutoring and homework help is available Monday through Thursday in the library. All students are welcome to come work on homework, use the computer center, or receive tutoring from Family Focus tutors.
Meets Monday through Thursday from 3:00-6:00pm in the library.

Manley Student Leadership Team: This team is for all current student leaders. We meet Tuesdays during all four lunch periods in the teachers lunch room to develop our leadership skills and take action in our school.

Mayor Daley's Book Club: The MDBC @ Manley meets approximately once a month starting in October. Club members make their own book selections at the beginning of the year and meet to discuss the books throughout the year. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Battle of the Books, literacy-related service learning projects, and the end-of-year MDBC Annual Spring Conference.
Meets approximately once a month in the library, usually after school on a Friday.

National Honor Society: Manley High School's Martin Luther King Jr. chapter of the National Honor Society includes dedicated Juniors and Seniors who pledge to uphold the NHS pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Members plan service projects throughout the year including the Annual Holiday Dinner for the Homeless and the Spring Blood Drive. In order to be eligible for membership, Sophmore and Junior students must meet rigorous standards in scholarship, leadership, and character. NHS induction takes place at the end of a student's Sophomore or Junior year.

Orienteering Team (Army JROTC): Manley High School Army JROTC program offers an Orienteering Team in which cadets travel to different locations, primarily forest preserves, and negotiate terrain (valleys, plains, and forests) while locating check points within certain time constraints based on the difficulty and length of the course. As cadets become more adept at navigating these locations, they may qualify for awards based on their performance as a team and as individuals.

Peer Jury: Peer Jury consists of a group of specially trained student leaders who are referred cases from the Discipline Office. Peer Jurors work with the referred student to identify the harm caused and to create an agreement that will repair the harm.
Meets at various times throughout the year.

Scholarship Workshop: All students are welcome to attend these twice weekly sessions, where they can receive assistance as they work on scholarships, college admission applications, college tour applications, and/or college-related summer opportunity programs. The Scholarship Workshop meets in the library and is led by UMOJA staff.
Meets Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30 in the library.

Spanish Club: Join the Spanish Club on the first Monday of each month and experience the beauty of the Latino culture. Taste, smell, and partake in some traditional Latin American dishes. Hear, feel and move to the rhythms of Latin American music and learn about common traditions and custums in the Spanish speaking world.

Upward Bound: Upward Bound is a college preparation program that provides a variety of support services to fifty Manley students from the Class of 2011 throughout the school year and summer. Students in the program receive academic advising, tutoring, and participate in numerous college visits and cultural events throughout the year.

Wildin' Out Wildcats: This pep squad, led by City Year, supports Manley's athletic teams.

Writer's Workshop: Umoja runs an After School Matters Writer's Workshop three days a week after school. This year's Writer's Workshop theme is "The History of Hip Hop". Students in Writer's Workshop learn about hip hop, improve their writing skills, and have an opportunity to practice and engage with many forms of creative writing.
